Diabetes on the rise in Northeast

BY Our Staff Reporter

Guwahati, Nov 7: The number of people in the age group of 18-25 in the region with Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, general secretary of the North Eastern Diabetes Society Dr Sanjeev Medhi said today, adding that in India, the disease kills one person every ten seconds.

Medhi, however, said 50 per cent of the patients are not even aware that they are living with diabetes.

He said that sedentary life-style with lack of exercise and intake of high caloric-value food and salt leads to central obesity and insulin resistance, which are main reasons for diabetes.

"Physical exercise is one of the best ways to get rid of diabetes. A little bit of effort can make it easier for people to live in a better way," Medhi added.
