Dispur to notify 20 monuments for preservation

Guwahati, May 29: In what will give a fillip to their preservation, twenty monuments in the State which are more than a hundred years old will be notified by the Assam government under the ‘Assam Ancient Monuments and Records Act, 1959’.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting Thursday evening.

The sites include Thowra Doul (Thaora), Gallows Site of Piyali Phukan (Sivasagar), Fakuwa Doul (Sivasagar), Hara Gauri Doul (Sivasagar), Bogi Doul (Amguri), Borpatra Tank (Amguri), pukhuri Tank (Amguri), Jagadhatri Doul (Amguri), Devi Doul (Amguri), Vishnu Doul (Amguri), Barpatra Vishnu Doul (Amguri), Sa Dhuwa Pukhuri (zira), Charaideo Archaeological Site (zira), Gorokhiya Doul (zira), Piyali Phukar Doul (zira),  Pukhuri Shiva Doul (Amguri), Moterjhar Temple (Golokganj), Magazine House (Bogoribari), Burah Mayong Archaeological Site (Mayong) and Silsang Archaeological Site (Morigaon).

Official sources said though the government had been taking up works for the preservation and conservation of these monuments, these were not in the notified list of ancient monuments.

“All that had been done so far was customary. No one thought about notifying these monuments. Now that we have brought them under the Act, there will be regular funding and steps for their protection and preservation. It will also help in availing of Central funds,” Cultural Affairs Minister Bismita Gogoi said.
