Doctor attempts to kill wife, sent to judicial custody

Dibrugarh, May 24: A practicing eye specialist and a visiting doctor of a local nursing home and central government hospital has been sent to 14 days judicial custody for allegedly attempting to kill his wife, a teacher at Kodomoni Lower Primary School, on Monday.

According to sources, the accused Dr Simanta Konowar is being charged with beating and causing physical injuries to his wife Rekha Hazarika since 2012 when the accused, allegedly entered into an illegitimate relationship with a married women who has been serving as Registrar at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital.

The married life of Dr Simanta and Rekha Hazarika, who also have a 10-year old daughter, turned worse with Konwar putting unfair demands of divorce on his wife. The regular affairs of brutal domestic cruelty by Dr Konwar, in the wake of protests from his wife, went unnoticed and his unlawful affair with married women who has also a child, sustained.

The married life of Dr Simanta and Rekha Hazarika since 2002 to 2012 was well adjusted without any ruffle, but got affected miserably from 2012 and circumstances got worse when in a heat of rage, Konwar tried to kill his wife with a sharp weapon on Monday night, thereby causing grievous physical injuries. The family members and local neighbors who resisted the vicious physical attack on Rekha Hazarika, at once, shifted her to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for treatment. The police was informed who rushed to Dr Konwar’s residence and arrested him on the specific charges of violence against women.

Putula Hazarika , the mother of the victim, lodged an FIR at Gabhorupothar Police Beat Post and as a result arrested Dr Konwar was produced before the court who sent him to 14 days judicial custody.
