'Don't equate Ambubachi with Kumbh'

Guwahati, June 23: Sodou Asom Devalaya Sangha today alleged there is a sustained campaign to denigrate the Ambubachi Mela.

"Some sections have launched a campaign equating the Ambubachi with Kumbh. They are calling Ambubachi a mini-Kumbh, which is not right," general secretary of the Sangha Suresh Chandra Bhattacharyya and secretary Prab Goswami said in a statement.

The Sangh also took exception to the rally taken out by ga sadhus from Bhootth to Kamakhya on Tuesday. "We have nothing to do with the rally. There was no permission to take out the rally," they said.

Even the Kamakhya Devalaya Doloi Kabindra Prasad Sarma had said there was no connection between the Ambubachi festival and the rally taken out by ga sadhus, which, some say tried to bring in an ambience normally seen in Kumbh melas.

The Sangh has appealed to the government and the administration to maintain the sanctity of the Ambubachi mela and preserve the religious traditions at the Shaktipeeth.
