EC gets cracking on model code

GUWAHATI, March 15: Within 10 days of enforcement of the model code of conduct (MCC), over Rs 60 lakh in cash and nearly 1.8 lakh litres of illicit liquor have been seized in the State. This was revealed by additiol CEO Nitin Khade in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, Khade said, “We are taking all steps to ensure adherence to model code of conduct guidelines as set by the Election Commission.”

He also informed that 355 teams have been formed for enforcing MCC, along with 361 static surveillance teams, 394 flying squads and 324 check posts.

“Altogether Rs 60,34,188 in cash and 1,79,853 litres of illicit liquor have been seized so far. Out of 32,237 licensed arms in the State, 23,323 have been deposited so far, while 57 illegal arms and 172 ammunitions have been seized,” Khade said.

Action against 868 trouble mongers has been initiated and 1,479 non-bailable warrants have been executed since announcement of elections earlier this month.

Khade further informed that 631 vulnerable hamlets have been identified so far while 1,913 polling stations have been marked as critical.

He added that media certification committees have been formed for approving advertisements and messages by political parties before broadcast or sent through SMS. “We are ensuring that there is no use of money or muscle power in the election,” Khade added.
