EC will ensure free, fair, peaceful elections: Zaidi

NEW DELHI, April 19: New Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) S sim Zaidi on Sunday said the Election Commission (EC) would “strive to deliver elections which are spotlessly free, fair, peaceful transparent and highly participative each time”.

Zaidi, who took over as the CEC on Sunday, said the EC would focus on voter-centric activities from enrolment to ebling them with e-services.

The EC will also formulate a strategic plan for 10-15 years based on principles of independence, transparency, professiolism, inclusiveness and measurable outputs, an official release said after Zaidi assumed office.

“The plan will be based on all-round institutiol strengthening,  voter education and an efficient election operation,” Zaidi said.

“During my tenure as chief election commissioner, I would like EC to be more vibrant, transparent and accountable organisation, which is open to receiving new ideas and best practices. The commission will like to formulate its guiding principles based on good governce,” the statement cited Zaidi as saying.

Zaidi, who assumed charge as the 20th CEC, succeeded HS Brahma, who laid down office on Saturday after completing his tenure. Prior to this, Zaidi served as Election Commissioner since August 7, 2012. Before joining the EC, Zaidi served in the Indian Administrative Service (1976 batch). IANS
