Electors Verification Programme Generates Lukewarm Response

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: With only five days left for the Electors Verification Programme to conclude, less than 30 per cent of voters of the State have so far come forward to get themselves verified under the nation-wide programme of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

A microscopic number of voters from districts in Upper Assam have participated in the Electors Verification Programme. Even though the number is comparatively higher in Lower Assam districts, it is not satisfactory. Less than eight per cent voters in Kamrup Metropolitan district have so far verified themselves under the ongoing programme.

Though the Electors Verification Programme and the final NRC are not interlinked, yet, the ECI’s move holds significance insofar as verification of all eligible voters of the country is concerned. On the basis of the ongoing verification programme the draft photo electoral roll will be published. The draft will be the basis of the final photo electoral roll scheduled to be published in 2020. As per the last photo electoral roll Assam has 2,19,91,112 voters. A voter from each family gets a username and password once the individual submits his EPIC (electoral photo identity card) and mobile number by logging into http://nvsp.in/. After receiving the username and password, the voter can check whether the information about his or her family members is correct or not. If information are not correct, voters can rectify the mistakes by uploading prescribed documents in the nvsp website.

Electors can also access to “votershelpline’, a mobile app to participate in the verification programme.

Chief Electoral Officer, Assam Mukesh Chandra Sahu told The Sentinel that he is hopeful that maximum number of voters will participate in the Electors Verification Programme by October 15. He said voters by participating in the programme can also upload their mobile phones and e-mails in the electoral rolls.

Once the voters verify themselves they will receive information about their electors’ status and polling stations at mobile phones and e-mail addresses from the ECI in future.
