Farmer commits suicide, Gogoi orders probe

3,908 farmers committed suicide in Assam in last 15 years: NCRB

GUWAHATI, Oct 18: The suicide of a farmer from Nokhora village near Tihu in lbari district sent shock waves across the State on Sunday. The farmer identified as Dibakar Kalita (48) killed himself by slashing his throat with a blade.

It has been learnt that soon after the incident which occurred at around 10.30 pm, the farmer was rushed to lbari civil hospital, but due to his critical condition, he was immediately referred to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to injuries en route to GMCH.

It may be mentioned that as per a report by the tiol Crime Records Bureau, the total number of farmers suicide in the State stands at a worrying figure of 3,908 in the last 15 years, with 21 suicides in 2014 alone. Assam happened to be the only State in the Northeast to witness suicide by farmers in 2014.

Meanwhile, soon after news broke of yet another farmer suicide, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi ordered the Chief Secretary to conduct an inquiry and submit a report at the earliest. Appealing to farmers to file their complaints to deputy commissioners, Gogoi directed the DCs to address the same at the earliest.

On the other hand, Agriculture minister Rockybul Hussain said, "I have asked the Director of Agriculture to conduct an enquiry and submit a report. We appeal to farmers to let us know of their problems as we are here to solve them. Our government brought forth many schemes for farmers and many new schemes are in pipeline."

The Agriculture minister also ordered the ADOs and VLEWs of the Agriculture department to go to farmers and hear their problems. He warned stern action if the officials fail to address the needs of farmers.
