Flood havoc: 28 embankment breaches, informs Mahanta

GUWAHATI, Aug 11: In the recent devastating floods, embankments in 28 places in Assam were breached. Fielding a question raised by AGP MLA Phanibhusan Chowdhury in the House on the condition of embankments after the floods, State Water Resources Minister Keshav Mahanta on Thursday informed that 28 breaches (2 embankments were cut by local people) in embankments stretching about 1.73 km were reported from all over the State. Eleven of the total 28 breaches were reported in south Assam's Karimganj district alone. In Majuli, one embankment of 85 metre length was breached in the recent wave of floods, Mahanta said, adding that embankments were breached at 50 places all over the State in last year's floods. In Assam, there are 423 embankments stretching 4,474.42 km and of it, 295 embankments stretching 3,998 km are already past their lifespan.
