Floods ease, but four more die

Guwahati, Sept 5: The flood situation in the State eased on Saturday, but four more people died in the calamity in the last 24 hours, taking the toll since June to 49.

In the Saturday bulletin, the Assam State Disaster Magement Authority said around 16.28 lakh people have been affected by the disaster, of which around 2.26 lakh are taking shelter in 294 relief camps.

The four latest deaths have been reported from Dalgaon in Darrang, Dibrugarh, Jagiroad in Morigaon and Barkhettri in lbari. The Brahmaputra was still flowing above the danger level throughout the State.

In Guwahati, the water level of the mighty river decreased from 50.21 m to 50.03 m in the last 24 hours, but it was still above the danger level by nearly half a metre. Around 2,017 villages in 84 revenue circles of 20 districts are still under waters.  Around 600 houses have been fully damaged in Bongaigaon district alone.

The floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure in the State, spping communication in many areas.
