Food safety: Traders asked to get licenses

Guwahati, June 29: To ensure that the public get hygienic and standardized food adhering to safety norms under Food Safety Standard Act, 2006, the Health department has introduced an online registration and licensing system which can be accessed at the official website foodIicençing @fssai.gov.in for all the 27 districts of Assam with effect from June 30. At present in Assam, there are about 25,000 food business operators, of which about 4,000 have valid licence and about 2,300 are registered. Food Business Operators (FBOs), Include all establishments dealing with food ranging from five starred hotels and restaurants to canteens arid dhabas, as well as, whole sellers, retailers and caterers. The Food Safety Standard Act, 2006 has made it mandatory that all FBOs are licensed failing which they cannot operate and any person or, FBO found operating without valid license will be liable to legal action under the provisions of Food Safety Standard Act, 2006 as informed by the Food Safety Commissionerate, an official release said.
