BOKO/Guwahati, July 5: Four passengers were killed and 25 others were seriously injured when the bus they were travelling in from Guwahati to Dhubri met with an accident near Sakhati, around 15 kilometers from Boko.

All the injured have been rushed to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) where the condition of some of the injured is reported to be critical. The injured persons are yet to be identified, an official said.

The accident occurred early today morning when the Tata Ultra bus (AS-01-FC-2511), carrying around 60 passengers, most of them going home from Guwahati for Id-Ul-Fitr, fell into a water body from a bridge on NH 37 while overtaking a truck. A senior police official said the driver lost control of the bus when it was hit by the truck from backside while overtaking, resulting in the tragedy.

Rofikul Hoque, Suleman Sekh, Majdur Rahman and another person died on the spot.

Senior district administration and police officials rushed to the spot immediately after the accident. NDRF teams were pressed into service for rescuing the injured passengers.

South Kamrup deputy commissioner RP Baruah and superintendent of police P Saikia supervised the rescue operations.

Locals alleged that there have been a series of tragedies in the past on NH 37 mostly due to rash driving.
