ga miscreants raid Jorhat border

Jorhat, Nov 21: The Assam-galand border in Jorhat district remained tense after ga miscreants kidpped two Assamese villagers last night. One of the victims maged to escape, while police rescued the other today.

Subhash Gowala (57) and Sopuntu Majhi (49) were abducted from their village at Morongial Balijaan Grant under Deberapara outpost of Mariani police station.

Sources said a fifteen-member armed group swooped down on the village, located near the border outpost. They first attacked the family members of both Subhash and Sopuntu, including minors and children, vandalized properties and later abducted the duo at gunpoint.

Villagers however said the miscreants were carrying rifles with long barrels, ruling out the involvement of NSCN or any other ga insurgent group.

An exhausted Sopuntu Majhi, who maged to reach the border outpost in the wee hours today, told the police about the incident.

A search party under SDPO Titabor, OC Mariani and IC Deberapara conducted a search operation inside galand and rescued Subhash Gowala, a few kilometers inside galand.

Sources have ruled out involvement of underground elements.

Villagers said the ga miscreants were scouting for some “samaan” (thing), which ATTSA leader Deepak Tanti described as something linked to sorcery. But Tanti claimed that the two victims were mere cultivators and not associated with witchcraft.

ATTSA activists today staged a two-hour demonstration against the incident, and later submitted a memorandum to the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner demanding immediate arrest of the culprits besides compensation to the victims.
