Gauhati University To Introduce New Assessment System

GUWAHATI: Gauhati University has decided to introduce a new assessment system to enable its undergraduate students to choose diverse courses and also have the autonomy to decide on the place, pace and time of learning.

The new assessment system designed as “Choice-based Credit System” will be introduced from the next academic session stating in June this year.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended that it is desirable for all institutions of higher education in the country to move to a choice-based credit system and, together with it, implement a uniform grading system. Assam University in Silchar had implemented the system in the last academic session.

The Assam College Principals’ Council while welcoming the Gauhati University’s move said the new system will offer flexibility to students in choosing subjects.

“With an aim to bring uniformity in the undergraduate courses across the country, the UGC has framed a syllabus. A university can change only up to 30 per cent of this syllabus for its undergraduate courses. Inter-university migration for a student will be comfortable under the new assessment system of Gauhati University,” a member of the Principals’ Council said.

Under the new assessment system, honours students will have to study two skill development subjects and the general course (pass course) students will have to take four skill subjects. Gauhati University will introduce several skill courses for its affiliated colleges.

Gauhati University last week organized a workshop among the college principals on implementation of the new assessment system. The workshop was attended by Vice Chancellor of GU Mridul Hazarika, registrar of GU Nanigopal Mahanta and over 100 principals.

“We are excited about the new assessment system. We hope that students will be hugely benefitted and they can excel in their academic career,” a principal said.
