Guwahati, January 8: Taking note of the growing number of road accidents in the State, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed the transport department to make a comprehensive plan to check them.

The Chief Minister today discussed the issue with top officials of various allied departments, including transport, PWD and home.

“The Chief Minister asked the transport department to make a comprehensive plan to identify the accident–prone areas and put in place measures to check the mishaps,” official sources said.

Gogoi also directed that a massive drive should be undertaken to check cases of fake license and drunken driving

The Chief Minister further suggested that an elaborate study should be conducted, particularly in the accident prone areas, to identify the reasons for the mishaps.

The transport department has been asked to initiate a strategy to curb the problem within a fixed time–frame.

The current average of road accidents is 70 per day.

They rise to over 130 during festivities, particularly during New Year.

The tiol highway strip – areas in Kamrup, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, gaon, Golaghat, Cachar, Dhemaji and Karimganj districts – has been earmarked as the most accident prone zones.
