Gogoi flays NDA 'gimmickry'

ST status

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 1: Accusing the BJP-led NDA government of indulging in political gimmickry by assuring ST status to six ethnic communities of the State, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the Centre is politicizing the issue without taking any concrete measures to fulfil the promise.

Terming the Centre’s announcement made yesterday of forming a committee to prepare modalities for granting ST status as a dilatory tactic ‘which the BJP will forget after the Assembly elections’, Gogoi while addressing a press conference in the city, said: “The BJP government had communicated to representatives of the six ethnic communities that their demand has been met with only the Prime Minister remaining to sign the order.”

“But the same government is now saying that a committee to prepare modalities will submit its findings in three months and then the matter will be pursued,” he said, adding that it was an attempt to hoodwink the people of Assam.

“This is absolute political gimmickry at the highest level. I have never seen such gimmickry in my political career,” Gogoi said.

Meanwhile, reiterating his demand for restoration of Special Category status to Assam, the Chief Minister today said that he was contemplating to move court.

“The curtailing of Special Category status to Assam has hampered our development. I am planning to file a case seeking restoration of this facility,” Gogoi said, adding, “Of course, I will have to seek legal advice on how to go about it.”
