Gogoi now guns for medical facilities in TEs

Guwahati, Nov 11: In another move aimed at appeasing the tea community ahead of the assembly elections, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has formed a board to inspect medical facilities provided to the workers by tea garden magements.

The board - christened as the Medical Advisory Board for Plantation Labour - will function under the Labour & Employment department.

The board, headed by senior Congress leader Bhagirath Karan, will comprise the labour commissioner, NHM maging director and the director of health services besides other members, including representatives from the workers' unions and garden magements.

"The function of the board will be to inspect medical facilities at the tea gardens - availability of doctors, nurses, medicines and other infrastructure…if these are being provided to workers as per the Plantation Labour Act. After the inspection, we will submit a report to the government," the board's chairman Bhagirath Karan said.
