GUWAHATI, Dec 15: Sticking to his allegation that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was opposed and blocked at the entrance to Barpeta Xatra, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday said that he had persolly requested Xatradhikar Basistha Dev Sharma to facilitate Gandhi’s entry to the Xatra for offering prayers.

In a statement today, Gogoi also said that there were intelligence reports suggesting that women would try to prevent Rahul Gandhi from entering the Xatra. He also alleged that the women were from RSS background and were instigated by some people having strong RSS links. Gogoi said, “The whole intention of blocking Rahul Gandhi from entering the Xatra was done to polarize the political landscape of the State to garner political mileage by a certain political entity.”

Meanwhile, hitting out at BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, senior Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi said, “We asked Rahul Gandhi to drop the visit as we had intelligence reports suggesting an untoward situation. So, Rahul Gandhi paid his obeisance from the gate and started the ‘padayatra’. But when we were returning after the padayatra, we saw that there was no one at the gate, and so we entered the Xatra and offered our prayers.

Bordoloi further added, “Himanta Biswa Sarma is now trying to establish two baseless things and he is making an issue out of it. One is that Rahul Gandhi is lying to the people of Assam and the Assamese society, and secondly, he is racking up the ‘gamosa’ issue to prove that it was a Bangladeshi gamosa.”
