Gogoi to set up Tea Tribe commission

Silchar/ Guwahati, Jan 7: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced that the government will constitute a Tea Tribe Commission to facilitate all round development of the tea tribes of Assam.

Addressing a tea workers convention at Silchar on Thursday, Gogoi said, "We want all round development of the tea tribes living in Assam for decades as they are playing an inseparable role in strengthening the composite culture of Assam."

Gogoi moreover said that the proposed Tea Tribe Commission will address all the key areas of the tea tribe community such as health, nutrition, employment etc. He also informed that the State government will set a separate directorate for the education of the tea tribe community to expedite their educatiol development and facilitate skill development.

Acknowledging the immense contribution of the tea tribe community for social and economic development of Assam, Gogoi said, "Development of tea tribes will lead to a developed Assam and it is the foremost duty of the government to accelerate their development".

The Chief Minister also said that the government is all set to announce a fixed wage for tea workers which will be higher than the existing wages.

He further said his government will formulate a policy called Bagan Ghar to ensure housing to all tea workers. Gogoi also underlined the need of bringing 'Tea' to the State List from the Union List, saying that his government is working on this aspect.

Sport Minister Ajit Singh, Social Welfare Minister Gautam Roy, MP Sushmita Deb along with Parliamentary Secretaries, MLAs, office bearers of Barak Cha Shramik Union were also present on the occasion.
