Graft cases filed against 17 IPS-APS officers

GUWAHATI, July 25: Sadly reflective of the plummeting levels of integrity in the police forces, corruption cases have been filed against as many as 17 IPS and APS officers across the State. These cases are now in different stages of investigation.

In his answer to a query raised by AGP MLA Phanibushan Chowdhury, Parliamentary Affairs minister, on behalf of State Home minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary said, “Cases have been lodged against 17 IPS and APS officers in the State and these cases are now under investigation.”

Patowary further said, “Cases like sexual assault, corruption, blackmailing, extortion, harassment, alleged torture, allegation of corporal punishment, misuse of power of post, crimil conspiracy, bribery and similar others were lodged against these 17 police officers in the State.”

On the number of posts vacant in Assam Police, Patowary said, “Out of 72,118 sanctioned posts in Assam Police, 11,782 posts are lying vacant at present; 20 posts of Indian Police Service and 114 posts for Assam Police Service are lying vacant; while 107 IPS and 456 APS officers are working in the State at present,” adding, “the process to fill 4,076 posts is underway.”
