Grant citizenship rights to Chakmas, Hajongs in Aruchal, says SC

New Delhi, Sept 17: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the central and Aruchal Pradesh governments to confer the citizenship rights on the "eligible" Chakmas and Hajong people coupled with steps to protect their lives and liberty and guard them against any discrimition. Allowing the petition by the Committee for Citizenship Rights of the Chakmas (CCRC) of Aruchal Pradesh, a bench of Justice Anil R. Dave and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel in their judgment said: "We direct the government of India and the state of Aruchal Pradesh to filise the conferment of citizenship rights on eligible Chakmas and Hajongs."
