Green Tribul's advocate commission to inspect site

NHPC's Lower Subansiri project

Guwahati, May 25: The tiol Green Tribul today appointed an advocate commission which has been instructed to the visit the Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project site and submit a report.

The commission will be led by advocate Poshali Banerjee.

The commission has been directed to visit the dam site at Gerukamukh by first week of June. She will be joined by the counsels of all the respondents in the case.

The NHPC has been directed to bear the cost of the commission’s inspection.

The court gave the direction after the petitioner, Assam Public Works chairperson Abhijeet Sharma told the court that NHPC has started prelimiry works to resume construction of the dam.

“We have produced newspaper cuttings, photographs, CDs that were being distributed among the local populace and advertisements telecast in local news channels etc.,” Sharma said.

The court has fixed August 4 as the next date of hearing.

In his petition, Sharma had sought a stay in the project till the construction company NHPC complies with certain changes in the proposal to ensure that there are no downstream effects due to the project.
