HC reserves verdict on Rumi's bail plea

Borkhola MLA continues to elude cops, pleads ignorance of Chauhan’s crimil activities

Guwahati, April 9: The Gauhati High Court today reserved its verdict on the anticipatory bail petition by Borkhola legislator Rumi th, charged with having links with notorious car lifter Anil Chauhan who was arrested recently.

As the MLA remained elusive, her lawyer prayed for anticipatory bail at the Gauhati High Court on the case lodged by Asomiya Yuva Manch (AYM) at Dispur police station. The court, however, reserved its verdict till tomorrow.

In their FIR, the AYM had accused the MLA of giving shelter to Chauhan and abetting his crimil activities. The AYM alleged that th provided fake information to the Assembly secretariat for issue of a car pass to Chauhan, which has posed a security threat to the MLA hostel.

Police have registered a case under IPC sections 120 (b) (crimil conspiracy), 212 (harbouring offender) and 420 (fraud).

Earlier, on the directions of the Speaker, the Assembly principal secretary had also issued a notice to the controversial MLA, seeking an explation as to why she had recommended a car pass for the crimil.

In her explation submitted to the Assembly secretariat last evening, th said that Chauhan’s wife was an active Congress worker and as such they frequently held meetings.

The controversial legislator claimed that it was through Chauhan’s wife Rita that she came to know Anil Chauhan. She gave the car pass in good faith to eble Rita to visit her residence. th claimed that she was not aware about the crimil activities of Anil Chauhan, sources in the Assembly secretariat said, citing her reply to the notice.

Assembly principal secretary GP Das said the reply will be given to the Speaker and based on his directions, further action will be taken.

Meanwhile, Dispur police said the Borkhola MLA will be examined in connection with the case lodged against her.

The legislator was not available for comment. She was neither in her residence at Borkhola nor in the MLA hostel.
