Heavyweights To File Nomination Papers For Lok Sabha Election Today

GUWAHATI: Monday being the last day for filing of nomination papers for the first phase Lok Sabha elections scheduled to be held on April 11, political heavyweights are ready to file their papers in the State.

Only eight candidates have so far filed their nominations for the first phase of Parliamentary elections in Kaliabor, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Tezpur constituencies.

While two candidates each in Kaliabor, Jorhat and Lakhimpur have filed their nomination papers, one candidate each submitted papers both in Dibrugarh and Tezpur. On Monday, many heavyweight candidates from both the BJP and the Congress including Topon Kumar Gogoi (BJP), Pradan Barua (BJP), Pallav Lochan Das (BJP), MGVK Bhanu (Congress), Pabon Singh Ghatowar (Congress) and Moni Madhab Mahanta (AGP) will file their nomination papers. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will be present with some of the BJP candidates during filing of nominations on Monday.

As per the schedule, scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on March 26 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature has been fixed on March 28.

Meanwhile, Labour Minister Pallav Lochan Das, the BJP candidate from Tezpur on Sunday participated in the campaigning at Biswanath Chariali and sought blessing at Biswanath Baba temple at the same place. He also held a meeting of party workers which was attended by all sitting MLAs under Tezpur Parliamentary constituency.

The AGP candidate from Kaliabor, Moni Madhab Mahanta visited Bordowa Than at Batadrava Assembly constituency to seek blessing of the Almighty. A joint meeting of AGP-BJP was also held at Batadrava in the presence of the local BJP MLA Angurlata Deka and Moni Madhab Mahanta. Sushanta Borgohain (Congress) also campaigned at a number of places in Jorhat LS seat.

On the other hand, BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav on Sunday campaigned for the party’s candidate Haren Sing Bey from the Autonomous District (Diphu) constituency.
