GUWAHATI, June 26: It seems that a section of officers in the State Education Department works overtime while protecting 'wrongdoers' so as to let them go 'scot-free'. It is hard to swallow but a proven fact that the department had a number of 'ghost teachers' against whom there are records of PF accounts and withdrawal of money from them.

There has been an unholy nexus between a section of officers in the Directorate of Elementary Education and a head teacher who has been clearly on the wrong side of the law. Kumud Chandra Kalita, the head teacher of Durga Sarober LP School, Maligaon is the man who has been proved to have hoodwinked other teachers by fraudulently withdrawing their PF deposits, besides withdrawing PF deposits from the accounts of a number of 'ghost teachers'. When the  matter came to light, a number of elementary education officers let Kumud Chandra Kalita go scot-free without giving him an exemplary punishment, feel the teachers who were defrauded by Kalita. Kumud Chandra Kalita is the secretary of the LP School Centre in the area who happens to collect the salaries of teachers of LP schools falling under the centre.

According to a section of defrauded teachers, Kumud Chandra Kalita fraudulently withdrew the PF money deposited in the account of Kamala Pradhani, a temporary teacher of Boragaon Nepali LP School in the Maligaon area.

In another case, Kumud Chandra Kalita withdrew the PF deposits of one 'Kamal Sarma', shown as a teacher of Pub Gotagar LP School, Maligaon. Strangely enough, the school  has no teacher with the me 'Kamal Sarma' against whom a PF account was opened. The aggrieved teachers said that it was none other than Kumud Chandra Kalita who opened a number of fake PF accounts against a number of 'ghost teachers', and he is getting protection from the higher-ups in the department.

In another case, Kumud Chandra Kalita withdrew the PF deposits of one 'Gokul Roy Dev' shown as a teacher of Nilachal Vidyapith, East Maligaon. However, the fact, according to the defrauded teachers, is that the school has no teacher with this me.

The trickster adopted a different modus operandi in defrauding Biraja Devi, a permanent teacher of Lokapriya Bordoloi LP School, also in the Maligaon area. The teacher has her PF account, and Kumud Chandra Kalita withdrew the money by opening a fake PF account in her me.  He also withdrew the PF money of another 'ghost teacher', Rovi Bala Devi, of the same school.

A few years back, DI Lohit Sarma could unearth the forgery being committed by the trickster and placed him under suspension. A few years later, another DI, Gopal Talukdar, succeeded Sarma and stayed the suspension order. Talaukdar was again succeeded by another DI, JU Ahmed, who showed to have reverted the basic payment of Kumud Chandra Kalita to 'Rs 4390 as on the date of his reinstatement and directed him to refund the excess amount drawn w.e.f. 13-7-04 to till date'.

However, present DI Mujibur Rahman is quite oblivious of this facts. When the aggrieved teachers rushed to him seeking exemplary punishment to Kumud Chandra Kalita he said that all those documents against the trickster were 'missing'.
