HS performance levels shoot up, girls trump boys

Guwahati, June 2: The results of the Higher Secondary examitions conducted by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) saw a remarkable jump in pass percentage in all the three streams.

The pass percentage in Science was 90.90, an increase of nearly 4 percent over last year's. Similarly, the pass percentages in Arts and Commerce streams were 79.92 and 86.01, up by nearly 5 percent for both as compared to last year.

gaon's Ramanujan Junior College stole the limelight yet again this year, producing both the Arts and Science toppers.

Rupsikha Kalita (486 marks) topped the Arts examition, while her college-mate Ankur Jyoti Bora was the topper in Science stream with 488 marks.

Eight toppers, including the first rank holder, in the Commerce stream are from Gauhati Commerce College. Rajneesh Bharadwaj was the topper in Commerce stream with 474 marks.

There was only one students from Guwahati in the list of toppers in Arts stream - Gautami Bezbaruah (10th rank) of Assam Jatiya Vidyalaya.

However, six rank holders in Science stream are from Cotton College.

In Arts stream, a total of 1,90,899 candidates had appeared for the examition of which 1,52,568 cleared it. In Science, 30,764 of the total 33,822 candidates passed the examition while in Commerce, 13,712 of 15,942 candidates were successful.

In Arts stream, there were 23,795 first division holders, while in Science and Commerce streams there were 19,397 and 3,330 first division holders.

In all the three streams, the pass percentage of girls was more than boys. In Arts, the pass percentage of girls was 81.08 compared to 78.68 of boys. In Science, 93.29 percent girls cleared the exams, compared to 90.01 percent boys. In Commerce, the pass percentages of girls and boys were 89.65 and 87.29.

District-wise, Dhemaji again topped in terms of pass percentage in all the three streams (94.76 in Arts, 95.89 in Science and 98.12 in Commerce).

In the Vocatiol stream, of the 880 students who appeared for the examition, 739 cleared the hurdle.
