KOKRAJHAR/ GUWAHATI, Aug 14: On the eve of Independence Day, security forces averted a major strike by militants in Kokrajhar district, gunning down a Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) cadre who was tasked to blow up a railway track at Ravapara under Fakiragram police station on Thursday night. The militant was identified as Rabi Ray (25) of Dolgaon under Gossaigaon sub division.

Talking to media persons, the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Rajput Regiment, IP Singh said on getting specific information that a group of 3/4 KLO cadres were making an attempt to plant an IED on the railway track, a joint operation was launched by Kokrajhar police, 3rd Rajput Regiment and 129 Bn. CRPF at village Ravapara under Fakiragram police station, adjacent to the railway track at around 8.15 pm on Thursday. He said an encounter took place between a group of suspected KLO militants and the joint operation team at 11.45 pm in which one hardcore rebel was injured.

The injured militant was brought to RN Brahma Civil Hospital in Kokrajhar for treatment but he was succumbed to injuries. Superintendent of police, Kokrajhar, Shyamal Prasad Saikia said the joint operation team recovered one 7.65 mm pistol along with a magazine and three rounds of live ammunitions from his possession. Besides, they also recovered one powerful IED weighing 7 kg, two hand gredes, some rounds of fired cases, a detotor, a hand bag, four SIM cards and other incrimiting materials. He said two other militants maged to escape under the cover of darkness.

Three IEDs found: A joint team of police and CRPF recovered three IEDS from the residence of One zimuddin at Botabari in Dhing in gaon district. The accused has been arrested.
