Implementation of Clause-VI; Accept Committee report with respect, says AASU

* Students’ union to skip February 25 function

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Sunday demanded the Centre to accept the report of the High-level Committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and implement the same in a time bound manner.

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi told The Sentinel that Clause-VI was incorporated in the historic Assam Accord to safeguard the identity, culture and language of the indigenous people of the State for taking the burden of Bangladeshis who had entered Assam between 1951 and March 25, 1971. He said that implementation of Clause-VI is long overdue for the indigenous people.

“We have heard that the Chief Minister will receive the report of the High-Level Committee on Clause 6 on February 25 in the presence of his Cabinet Ministers. The AASU leaders will not be present in that function. It is not much important for the AASU as to who will submit the report. The big issue for us is implementation of the report in an effective and time bound manner,” Gogoi said.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath and AASU chief advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjya who were members of the High-Powered Committee, had signed the report on February 10, 2020. Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma was the chairman of the 14-member Committee.
