In a first, Jorhat college marks Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary

JORHAT, Jan 9: A special event marking the 400th death anniversary of William Shakespeare was organized in the conference hall of Jorhat College on Saturday by the institution's Forum of English Studies. The event, according to the Principal of Jorhat College, was the first of its kind in India.The programme was iugurated by Pranjal Dutta, Head of the English department, Central College, Jorhat. He spoke on the life of William Shakespeare with reference to the English Society in the Elizabethan Age.Principal Dr Devabrata Sharma spoke on the use of rhetoric in Julius Caesar which impressed the student audience. Manisha Duara, Head of the English Department, Jorhat College and other faculty members of the English Department, Pankajpani Saikia and Subhrajyoti Chandra focussed on the universality, contemporaneity and the relevance of Shakespeare in modern times.The event concluded with the presentation of a cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth produced by BBC.
