In thirsty Guwahati, water schemes lie defunct

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, February 22: Due to negligence of the State Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, many drinking water supply projects in West Guwahati area have become defunct over the years. One can find many such defunct projects in the areas under Ramcharani Jilla Parishad.

Sources revealed that surprisingly many of these defunct water supply projects have been shown to be functiol in papers. Two such projects in the area, the construction of which were completed a few years ago, are yet to be iugurated.

There are more than 15 water supply projects at Azara, Mirzapur, Dekapara, Matia, Dharapur, Garal, Jogipara, Shyambhumi, Borjhar, Kendukuchi and Mazirgaon, but most of these are non-functiol now.

In the Keotpara locality, a drinking water supply project, the construction of which was completed a while ago, is yet to be iugurated. A water supply project at lower Mirzapur has been closed due to non-availability of people needing water supply connections to their homes.

There are many such glaring examples of defunct drinking water supply projects in West Guwahati area. With large parts of Guwahati lacking water supply, forcing thirsty residents to agitate frequently, such negligence by the PHE department is particularly galling.
