Income Tax Department Moves To Prevent Bribing of Voters

GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation), NER, Guwahati has opened a 24X7 Control Room & Complaint Monitoring Cell at seven North Eastern States to keep close surveillance over the movement of cash/valuables or other items suspected to be used for bribing voters during the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

A press communiqué issued by the Office of the Principal Director of Income Tax (Investigation), NER on Tuesday requested the people to communicate any information pertaining to black money and movement of large amount of cash/valuables etc. during the Lok Sabha election period which are likely to be used for bribing of electors to the 24X7 Control Room.

The communiqué has asked the people to call and WhatsApp to 9531107891 (for Assam), 9531107893 (Arunachal Pradesh), 9531107892 (Manipur), Meghalaya (9436394449), Mizoram (9531107894), Nagaland (9401991258) and Tripura (9531107895) to lodge their complaints to the Control Room.

According to the press communiqué, the entire exercise is being conducted by the Income Tax department as per directives of the Election Commission of India to ensure free and fair elections.

Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North East Region (NER), Kavita Jha recently deputed additional manpower of 116 officers and inspectors of Income Tax department to the Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation) for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. The prime objective of such development is to prevent flow of black money in the region to influence voters in the next month’s elections.

The Investigation Directorate of Income Tax has activated Air Intelligence Units at all airports in North East and will monitor the movement of cash or valuables. State authorities and police will also report movement of any suspicious cash to the Income Tax authorities.

Principal Director of Income Tax (Investigation) for NER, Sanjay Bahadur has already issued instructions for heightened surveillance and intelligence gathering during the elections in the region. Investigation Directorate authorities will enter and search any building, place, vessel, aircraft if it is suspected that any unaccounted money, bullion, jeweler or other valuable article or thing to be found there and seize the same under Section 132 of Income Tax Act.
