Indra Bania passes away

GUWAHATI, March 25: Veteran film and theatre actor Indra Bania passed away tonight at around 10 pm at Hayat Hospital in the city after a prolonged illness. Hailing from Dholpur in Lakhimpur district, he leaves behind actress wife Minu Bania, a son and daughter-in-law and a host of relatives. He is best known for his standout performances in Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai, Haladhar, Agnisan, Daman and Aai Kot i. His riveting performance in Jahnu Barua's Halodhiya Choraiye Baodhan Khai earned him the best actor award at the Locarno Intertiol Film Festival in 1988.  Bania also brilliantly portrayed Machang Lalung, imprisoned for 54 years without trial, in the short film Freedom at the Edge, which bagged an award at the Boston Intertiol Film Festival. An accomplished radio artiste, Bania's role as Gobar in the radion play'Gobardhan Charit' is fondly remembered by listeners to this day.
