Information About Benefits for senior citizens

In India, so also in Assam, senior citizens can avail a host of benefits that can ease their financial burden. Senior citizens can avail of various discounts on travel fares. Men over the age of 60 and women over the age of 58 are eligible for 40% and 50% discount respectively while travelling by train, in all classes. Besides two reserved seats in all buses for senior citizens, ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation) offers 50 per cent fare discount for them in its buses.

Senior citizens also get higher interest on investments. The Senior Citizens’ Saving Scheme is available to all senior citizens over the age of 60. Senior citizens also get higher interest rate on fixed deposits than the standard rate. There are also some special welfare schemes for senior citizens. National Insurance offers ‘Varishta Mediclaim Policy’ for senior citizens aged 60-80. LIC’s PMV Vandana Yojana and Jeevan Shanti provide an assured pension to senior citizens.
