Guwahati, May 30: Assam will co-host the next edition of South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbanda Sonowal said here today.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function, Sonowal said Assam has been selected for hosting the SAF Games, along with Meghalaya.

“The next SAF Games will be held in Guwahati and Shillong,” the minister confirmed.

He said the State government had sent a letter, stating that it will extend all cooperation to organize the SAF Games here.

A controversy had erupted after the SAF Games, which was earlier decided to be jointly allotted to Assam and Meghalaya, was later offered to Kerala as the Assam government reportedly expressed its unpreparedness to host the Games.

However, the State government later clarified that it is ready to host the Games, with assistance from the Centre.  The Indian Olympic Association will now formally send the mes of Guwahati and Shillong to South Asian Games Federation for fil approval in its meeting which is scheduled to be held in June at Singapore.
