It's raining gold for India

GUWAHATI, Feb 9: India’s gold rush continued for the fifth day of the South Asian Games as the hosts today added another 25 golds to their tally to take it to 78.

India clinched 25 gold, 16 silver and 4 bronze medals on a highly productive day to stay firmly on top of the medals tally with an overall count of 124. Sri Lanka remained on second spot with 87 medals, while Pakistan with 37 medals maintained its third spot.

Most of the golds India bagged today came in swimming, athletics and archery. Indian swimmers totally domited in the Zakir Hussain pool this afternoon, picking up as many as seven gold medals from different events. Both men and women relay teams collected gold in 4X 200m freestyle while PS Madhu (50m backstroke, men), Damini Gowda (200m butterfly stroke, women), Sajan Prakash (200m butterfly stroke, men), V Malivika (400m freestyle, women) and Saurabh Sangvekar (400m freestyle, men) won the other golds in swimming.

On the track, Indian athletes picked up five golds while archers won three. India made clean sweeps in kho-kho and volleyball, bagging golds in both men and women’s sections.

Two Assam athletes Jayanta Talukdar and Supriya Gogoi joined in the gold rush today. Surpriya was part of the Indian women kho kho team which emerged champion while Jayanta led the archery team from the front to win gold in the archery recurve event. Talking to The Sentinel later, Surpriya said, “We were confident of winning gold in the tourment and I am very happy to reach that goal.”
