Jawan held for killing 2 persons, injuring one

Guwahati, February 16: An Assam Rifles jawan has been arrested after he gunned down two civilians and injured another following a brawl in Patia Chupuri in Tezpur.

Two persons were killed and another injured when an Assam Rifles jawan allegedly opened indiscrimite firing in an inebriated state in a house.

Police said the jawan, identified as Karmel Singh Kapur, has been arrested this morning.

The accused, already in an inebriated state, had reportedly gone to the house of one of the victim, Gautam Bora, around 9.30 pm last night and demanded liquor.

Bora used to sell liquor from his house, though it is not clear if he had the required license.

When Gautam Bora failed to serve him liquor, the jawan opened fire, in which Gautam Bora and his neighbour Babu Bora were killed.

Wife of Gautam Bora, Jinu, sustained bullet injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital in Tezpur.

The jawan was later arrested by the police and investigation into the matter is on.

Meanwhile, people from Patia Chupuri today gheraoed the Tezpur police station, where the accused is being kept, demanding justice for the victims’ families.
