Lack of basic facilities in women police station

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 25: Though the Assam Police and the Guwahati City Police in particular boast about the Women Police Station in Panbazar, the real picture of the police station will shock the readers. Established in the year 2010, the All Women Police Station even lacks basic amenities like toilet, even as celebrity campaigns on sanitation are in full swing throughout the country. The only toilet in the police station is located inside a lock-up and every time a police staff has to use it, they bring out the detainee in order to use the toilet. It has been a regular practice since 2010.

Leave it aside, the police station with a total strength of 25 personnel, have only one vehicle. For all purpose, they use this single vehicle; let it be going to the court or to a crime spot. The condition is such that sometime, the police fail to turn up at a crime spot for even two to three hours due to lack of vehicle.

The business of this police station is however not thin. In the year 2010 a total of 174 cases were registered, in 2011- 101 cases were registered, 2012-163 cases, 2013-216 cases, 138 cases in 2014 and till June 2015, 48 cases have been registered. The maximum of these cases were registered under section 498 A of IPC.

The police station has got 3 sub inspectors, 2 ASIs, 1 Havildar, 6 Head Constables and 12 constables. Sources have said that recently the new Commissioner of Police, Guwahati visited the police station after taking charge. The source also added that an Assistant Commissioner of Police will be soon appointed at the All Women Police Station and construction of office is underway. It needs to be mentioned that with the increasing number of crime against women in the city, though the city needs more such All Women Police Station, the failure on the part of Home department in providing the basic facilities to the existing one, has raised concern about the will of the department in providing security to the women folk of the city.
