GUWAHATI, Dec 15: The Asom Xatra Mahasabha on Tuesday termed Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s comment about RSS controlling the Barpeta Xatra as unfortute and said that xatras of Assam do not follow dictates from anyone. In a statement, the AXM said, “Many xatras of Assam are being encroached by people of suspicious tiolity, but the government has done nothing to solve it. Contrary to it, the Chief Minister is now saying that the no xatra land has been encroached upon. This is really unfortute as the Gauhati High Court itself ordered the government to free the encroached xatra lands by an order on March 27, 1997.” The AXM further slammed Chief Minister Gogoi for trying to play down the issue by announcing a fund of Rs 20 lakhs for Barpeta Xatra.
