Lightning kills seven in Barpeta

Barpeta, Aug 16: At least seven people, including three children, were killed and 21 injured on Saturday in Assam after lightning hit the boat they were travelling in across the Beki river, officials said.

The incident took place in Barpeta district, the officials said.

The injured people were admitted to Barpeta Medical College and Hospital.

Doctors said most of them received burn injuries and the condition of three of them was serious.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi deeply mourned the death of seven persons in the incident.

Gogoi, while expressing his deepest condolences to the members of the bereaved families, announced Rs 4 lakh each as ex-gratia to the next of kin of the victims and Rs 50,000 each to the grievously injured. Gogoi said the State Government would bear all the medical expenses for those who sustained injuries in the tragic incident.
