Maulana Badruddin Ajmal to promote Assamese language in Census

GUWAHATI: Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has assured the AXX (Axam Xahitya Xabha) that he will appeal to the Muslims of the State to identify themselves as Assamese by stating the Assamese language as their mother tongue in the forthcoming Census, slated to be started in the State from April 20, 2020.

The AXX had a core group discussion on the preservation and spread of the Assamese language in association with Ajmal Foundation here on Friday. Ajmal, on behalf of the Foundation, was the chief guest at the discussion.

AXX leaders have made a plea to Ajmal for his cooperation in preserving and spreading the Assamese language in the State. The AXX wants the Muslims of the State identify themselves as Assamese and own the Assamese language as theirs. And to make this really happen, the Muslims of the State should give the Assamese language the first preference in the coming Census.

Ajmal responded positively to the AXX’s plea. He, however, rued, “A section has been constantly targeting the people belonging to a particular religious community in the State. It’s hurting. Ajmal Foundation has already started promotion of the Assamese language and literature. In the previous censuses too, the minority people living in sar and other areas of the State did identify themselves as Assamese and stated the Assamese language as theirs. In such a situation, a constant political attack on a particular religious group of the State is simply not justified.”

Ajmal has assured the AXX that he is going to work in the run-up to the Census 2021 to make minorities living in sar and other areas in the State to mention Assamese as their mother tongue. He, however, has appealed to the AXX to define the term ‘indigenous people’ of Assam. “The odds are that the definition of the term ‘indigenous people of Assam’ to be given by a literary body of AXX’ stature will get takers among all in the State,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ajmal Foundation has donated ten computer sets and two printers to the AXX. It has also promised to provide computer sets to each and every branch of the AXX.
