GUWAHATI, March 14: The BJP today accused a minister in Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's Cabinet of giving shelter to a legally detected Bangladeshi. The party demanded nothing short of separate clarifications in this regard from the Chief Minister and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Anjan Dutta. The minister in question is Food and Civil Supplies and Health Minister Dr. zrul Islam.

In a statement issued to the press today, Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami said: “Soidul Ali was declared a foreigner by the Morigaon District Session Court in June 2014 as it found him to have come from Moimonsingh district of Bangladesh after March 25, 1971. Soidul Ali has been residing at Kadamtali Gaon in Morigaon district. With the Congress minister’s blessing, he had got a fourth grade in a department in Morigaon. Ali is now the cook of the minister at Dispur.”

“At a time when the BJP and other organizations in Assam have been agitating demanding deportation of Bangladeshis staying illegally in the State, how come a minister gives shelter to a foreigner defying the court order?” the BJP spokesperson questioned, and added: “This has proved yet again that Bangladeshis staying in Assam illegally are darlings of the Congress, especially its ministers in Assam.”

The Assam State Committee of the BJP has said that it has been proved yet again that the Bangladeshis staying illegally in Assam are the darlings of Congress ministers in Assam.
