Minority, tribal bodies stage protest in city

GUWAHATI, March 12: The members of organisations like the Asom Sangkhyalaghu Sangram Parishad and the All Santal Students’ Union staged a demonstration at the Dispur Last Gate here on Thursday for their various demands.
The Asom Sangkhyalaghu Sangram Parishad demanded that President’s rule be imposed in galand to deal with the lawlessness in the State. Some other demands of the Parishad are: Section 6-A of the Citizenship Act of 1955 should be retained as a cut off date for detection of foreigners, the Assam Districtwise Population Pattern Reflection in Service (in Class III and Class IV posts) Act, 1994, ected by the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1994, be implemented, 10 per cent seats for students of char areas be reserved in technical and higher education institutions, including medical and engineering colleges, to review the BTC Accord, to protect the rights of all communities and to seize all illegal arms and ammunition available in the BTAD areas.
On the other hand, the All Santal Students’ Union demanded the formation of Santal Development Council and allotment of specific fund as developmental package for the Santal community in the State, inclusion of the Santal tribe in the Scheduled Tribe list, proper relief and rehabilitation to the families of BTAD riot victims, security to the lives and properties of Santals, and few other demands.
