Mangaldai, Aug 21: The Dalgaon Police had to fire several rounds in the air to disperse a violent mob, mostly students, who blocked the highway and pelted stones at police after a road mishap in which a 15-year-old student was injured.

A speeding passenger bus hit one Eliza Begam (15), a class X student of Dalgaon HS School, injuring her seriously at around 8.45 am today.

The irate students of the school immediately blocked the NH 15 in protest against the “reckless” driving by commercial passenger vehicle drivers on the highway. The students had been demanding a speed-breaker in the area to regulate the speed of vehicles for the safety of students.

The agitated students tried to set the bus on fire, but were prevented by police.

The students engaged in a heated argument with police and later even pelted stones at the security men. They also reportedly tried to damage a vehicle of the Fire Service.

The Circle Officer of Dalgaon Revenue Circle sustained minor injuries after being hit by a stone. Finding no altertive, the police first resorted to cane-charge and then opened fire on the students using rubber bullets. Two students sustained minor injuries in the firing.  The driver of the passenger bus was said to be absconding. Meanwhile, the girl student, injured in the mishap, was immediately taken to Mangaldai Civil Hospital from where she was referred to GMCH.
