Moral policing in city, again

Seven arrested including a girl after bar fracas

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Dec 15: It seems no lessons have been learnt from the infamous GS Road incident in Guwahati, as in yet another horrific incident of moral policing, a girl was attacked by a group of men in Zoo Road Tiniali area of Guwahati. She was attacked while coming out of the popular Crystal Bar in the area at around 10 pm on Monday. The group of men stopped the girl near the bar, slapped her and pulled at her hair. They also allegedly touched the girl in ippropriate manner. Eyewitnesses say the girl was in search of a taxi to return while the hooligans spotted her and prevented her from getting into an auto standing nearby. It may be mentioned that the incident took place after the bar was closed early on Monday following a scuffle between two female customers inside the bar.

Talking to The Sentinel, the owner of the bar Mridul Bora said, “A girl in inebriated condition came to the bar at around 9.30 pm. However, she was not allowed inside for which she fought with the securitymen at the gate. After that, she forcibly entered the bar and started misbehaving with other customers. We reported the matter immediately to the police who came and intervened. When the customers were exiting the bar, some people misbehaved with some female customers.”

It may be mentioned that the girl who was harassed by the ‘moral police’ was not at all involved in the scuffle inside the bar. The goons also thrashed a youth who was coming out of the bar.

Meanwhile, a case under section 325, 354, 34 IPC has been registered and the CID of Assam police is investigating the whole incident. ADGP crime is investigating the matter and he is being assisted by the DCP Central, ACP Cyber Crime and ACP Chandmari. Police have already arrested 6 members of the ‘moral police’ brigade and a girl who was involved in the scuffle that took place inside the bar. The goons have been identified as Shiba Barua, Altaf Hussain, Bipul Das, Jak Deka, Samin Baishya and Nur Hussain, while the girl has been identified as Maya Saikia.
