More quakes create panic in State

GUWAHATI, April 26: Two fresh tremors shook the State on Sunday, though there was no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property. But the tremor, the epicenter of which was in Nepal, created panic among the people of the State. The first tremor, which lasted for a second, was felt around 12.42 hrs and the second one was felt after a few seconds in almost all the districts of the State. The quake shook buildings, rattled windows in houses while electric poles swayed. Sunday’s quake was 6.9 on the Richter scale in Nepal at a depth of 10 km with epicenter at Latitude 27.6 degree North and Longitude 85.9 degree East. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi instructed Assam Police ADGP Umesh Kumar to visit Kathmandu to look after the operation currently being conducted to rescue stranded Assamese people in Nepal. However, with panic triggered by Nepal earthquake in the State yet to die down, the Chief Minister flew off to Australia on Sunday morning on an education-related tour. Gogoi will be visiting Curtin University in Australia.
