Morigaon police suspends three constables for taking bribes

GUWAHATI, Oct 9: Morigaon Police has suspended three constables from service on charges of their involvement in a racket of taking bribes from persons against whom the Foreigners’ Tribunal issued notices suspecting them as illegal Bangladeshis.

The suspended constables are Dipak Pator, Dino Bora and Matbiur Rahman working in the Border Police branch under Mikirbhata police station in Morigaon district. According to allegations, these constables, instead of issuing a notice from Foreigners’ Tribunal, Morigaon to a person of suspected nationality, took bribes from the same person and assured him that they would solve his case. The person was assured that he would not have to appear before the Foreigners’ Tribunal. The accused even managed fraudulent signature of the person to show to the tribunal that the notice was delivered to the suspected national. Finally when the tribunal declared the person as illegal foreigner after an ex parte hearing, he revealed before the tribunal judge that no notice was ever given to him and he gave money to the police constables.

Morigaon SP Swapnanil Deka conducted an inquiry to unearth the racket and found the three constables guilty. The three were suspended on Monday.
