Mother's Day observed in city

GUWAHATI, May 10: The Intertiol Mother’s Day was celebrated in Guwahati today along with rest of the world through various functions, mostly lectures.

Mother’s Day is quite a modern celebration honouring own mothers and motherhood.

The women cell of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) Employees’ Association observed the day at Guwahati Press Club with various programmes. At the beginning, a minute silence was observed to condole the death of thousands in the recent earthquake in Nepal and those LIC employees who died in the past one year.

The chief guests at the programme were Dr. Miti Barthakur, Ali Ahmed and Bhagirathi Bhai. They all deliberated on the responsibilities and duties of women in society and in family. The fourth annual conference of the women cell coincided with the Mother’s Day.

The Day was also observed at the Mother’s Old-Age Home located at Bamunimaidam in the city. The old women in the Home were felicitated with bouquets. Some select speakers spoke on many families discarding their old parents. The mece of discarding old parents has been a major problem in Guwahati these days.
