GUWAHATI: The Gateway to the Northeast will be witness to a historic event in the mid part of December this year. This occasion is the Indo-Japan annual summit to be graced by the respective Prime Ministers of the two countries, Narendra Modi and Shinzo Abe. The summit is expected to witness the signing of a number of significant pacts. Both the leaders would be having parleys during a cruise on river Brahmaputra. They are also slated to visit the New Peace Museum in Imphal. The museum preserves many memories of World War-II. Though the dates of the summit have not been declared formally, sources informed The Sentinel that the meet is slated to be held on December 15 and 16.

Recently top officials of the External Affairs Ministry and other ministries visited Guwahati, and gave the green signal for the summit. To be organized by the Central government, the Assam government will provide necessary assistance in key sectors like reception and security. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Home department, Government of Assam, have already carried out review of the broad security aspects for the proposed summit.

Steps have been already initiated for a massive facelift of Guwahati city. The old bungalow of Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner on the southern banks of the Brahmaputra has already been renovated for the cultural function that will be organized there.

Cleaning operation is to be carried out on the entire South bank stretch from Raj Bhawan to Chakreshwar Temple (Kamakhya foothill) by the GMC. Reputed NGOs will be engaged for the purpose.
