NCHAC: Congress stakes claim

Governor assures special session for floor test

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 11: The Congress today staked claim to form the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, parading seventeen executive members before Governor PB Acharya at Raj Bhavan.

APCC president Anjan Dutta, Congress MP Sushmita Dev and former CEM Debojit Thaosen led the delegation of executive members, including former rebel leader Joel Garlosa.

Dutta said the Governor assured the delegation that a special session of the council will be called shortly where a floor test will be conducted.

The Congress claimed support of 17 members in the 30-member council.

Ten executive members, who had switched over to the BJP three months back, returned to the Congress on Sunday, protesting "excessive interference of the State BJP leaders in the affairs of the council."

The current council is being led by Niranjan Hojai. Former rebels Garlosa and Hojai had floated the now-disbanded DHD(J).
