NDFB (S) area commander gunned down, 5 rebels held

KOKRAJHAR, January 29: A platoon commander of the tiol Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB–Songbijit faction), identified as Jornelush rzary alias Jangkla, was killed in an encounter with security forces on Wednesday night around 9.30 pm at Repu Reserve Forest under Kachugaon police station of Kokrajhar.

Jangkla was the platoon commander of lbari district who was also allegedly involved in the brutal killing of Class–X student of Runikhata Girls’ High School, Priya Basumatary on August 20 last year in Chirang district and in the stching of six SLR weapons from Echo Task Force (ETF) personnel in Kokrajhar. Police said based on specific information about the presence of the platoon commander, a joint operation led by BTAD IGP Dr LR Bishnoi was carried out. The NDFB commander was killed in the exchange of gunfire.

One 7.65mm pistol, four live rounds of ammunition and two gredes were recovered from the slain militant.

Sources said the slain militant was also among the masterminds of the December 23 carge and allegedly involved in the killing of five persons on January 18, 2014 at Athiabari in Kokrajhar district.

Meanwhile, two NDFB(S) militants and three over ground workers were apprehended by troops of Red Horns Division and Assam Police in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts.  The operation was planned based on specific intelligence provided by the Gajraj Military Intelligence Unit.  

Among the arrested cadres is Sansuma Brahma alias B Susrwn, a 35th batch Myanmar–trained rebel.  

One 7.65mm pistol, two–country made revolvers, crude bomb and two hand gredes were recovered during the operations.

An army spokesman said that following the stepped–up operations in Kokrajhar and Chirang after the December 23 carge, 38 NDFB(S) cadres have been apprehended.
